Tenda Nova MW3: The Economic and Complete WiFi Mesh system

Tenda Nova MW3

There are several devices on the market to increase the coverage of the WiFi signal, but those equipped with WiFi Mesh technology certainly have an edge. Tenda Nova MW3 is a dual band WiFi system, equipped with three satellites capable of guaranteeing signal coverage of up to 300 m2. The installation of the device is very simple and allows to have a single SSID with a stable and constant connection throughout the house, avoiding the interruption points from one transmitter to another. Read our review to find out all about Nova MW3 Tent.

Tenda Nova MW3 technology

Let’s start by presenting Tenda, which is one of the main manufacturers of networking solutions, born in 1999 in Shenzhen, China. Nova MW3 is a system consisting of three small satellites (called nodes), equipped with two Ethernet ports each and two internal dual band antennas with 3dBi gain. The nodes, which will be positioned strategically inside the building, are small cubes of nine centimeters per side, with a rather pleasant shape. The wireless signal transmission standards are EEE 802.11ac / a / n for the 5GHz frequency and IEEE 802.11b / g / n for the 2.4GHz frequency. Theoretically, the nodes can transmit up to 867 Mbps at 5Ghz and 300 Mbps at 2.4 Ghz. The WiFi Mesh technology of Tenda Nova MW3 allows you to work simultaneously in double band, automatically selecting the type of signal to be assigned to the individual connected devices, thanks to the QoS system.

Unboxing and documentation

The package of Tenda Nova MW3 develops in length and contains inside the three nodes, the power supplies, the Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide. Unlike other Wireless Mesh systems, the documentation also includes the Italian language, making the process of commissioning the devices even more immediate.

Simplified installation

The installation of Tenda Nova MW3 is really simple and intuitive. The first good news is the impossibility of confusing the three satellites, since they are all the same, and each performs the same functions. Simply, the first satellite that will be connected to the home modem will become the primary node and all the other secondary ones.

Nova MW3 system installation

  • Install the Tenda WiFi app on a tablet or smartphone;
  • Choose a random node and connect the device’s WAN / LAN ports with the ethernet cable to the LAN port of the home modem;
  • Follow the installation wizard of the application;
  • Install subsequent nodes.

It must be said that Nova MW3 was the easiest to install WiFi Mesh system ever. In this case, we are talking about a product that is truly suitable for everyone. Having said that, during the installation it is expected to change the SSID and password directly within the application. On the back of each node are the SSIDs and the factory passwords (the same for all nodes) to perform the first installation.

Once the simple installation operations have been carried out, the Nova MW3 WiFi Mesh system is operational and ready to use. No additional configuration is needed to connect to the internet with your operator’s line.

Field trials

Nova MW3 guarantees stable and complete coverage on an area of approximately 300 square meters. The installation rules of the three nodes foresee to separate the devices for a maximum of two rooms and in any case within ten meters of each other. Obviously, this is a rather versatile directive, since the distances can be slightly reduced and increased, in case of need. In the first test, we discovered that the main node is able to “see” the secondary node even if it is positioned on the lower floor, with a very thick reinforced concrete sole, at a distance greater than the declared ten meters. The second node, located on the lower floor, allows you to use all the available bandwidth to connect the devices.

Fortunately, the nodes have colored LEDs on the front that help us in positioning, indicate the power of the connection between the devices (Green = Perfect, Yellow = Discreet, Red = Disconnected).

The transition from one node to another is immediate and the connection remains stable in all corners of the house. We also tested the product in a house developed on three floors (270 square meters approximately) by placing a node on each floor. Also in this case the connection was perfectly developed and functional. Through the Tenda WiFi application you can log in to remotely control the connection, set a parental control, select the type of connection (PPPoE, DHCP, static IP address and Bridge) and monitor the status of the network and connected devices.

We can say that in our Nova MW3 tests we basically achieved the same results obtained with the Netger Orbi system, which, however, in the router version with a single satellite costs more than double.

Conclusions

We found the Nova MW3 Tent system really functional and easy to install. It is a system that really allows you to eliminate areas not covered by the home WiFi signal. The market price of this product is at least 50% lower than other WiFi Mesh devices, costing less than $100 in the three-node configuration.  Quality and price ratio are therefore the main advantage of a system suitable for everyone, even the less experienced.
