A careful design and highlights
Speaking of him on first impressions and highlight this aspect of the phone, and in fact is something that is appreciated because of what has been achieved in terms of dimensions and finishes, especially considering that we speak of a terminal 5.5 – inch and if we are rather small hands. While handling a hand begins to be less comfortable when we talk about a greater width of approximately 70 millimeters, the fact is that with terminals like this, the ZTE Axon 7 or Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge can almost forget that we have a diagonal of 5.5 inches.
In fact, Huawei Nova Plus there is nothing badly when compared both with them and with other terminals same diagonal. Here we put a small sample, taking into account (height, width and thickness) dimensions, volume and weight. The pole, not as desired in this case, takes the iPhone 7 Plus, although repeated measures6s Plus continues to excel with respect to other rivals (and not) with the same diagonal.
Also, something that also is very short in relation to this is in the use of screen as the front. In this the Nova Plus has a percentage of 72.6%, similar to 72.2 in July Axon but not more than the S7 Edge, with 76.1%. Thus, although the upper and lower frames are not particularly close, the feeling is good in that aspect and moves us away from the feeling of having a frontal wasted.
The good feelings not only preserved, but also increase if we talk about construction, materials, finishes and design in general. As stated above, the Nova family (currently with only these two members) inherits the touches that Huawei is shaping in its renewed DNA from part of the leading manufacturers: metal, curves, discrete bands, protruding camera and a fingerprint reader rear and fully integrated.
Reader also works very, very well, as we are accustomed Huawei from Ascend Mate 7. Reading is very fast, being undemanding when the surface rests footprint (i.e. we ought not to place perfectly, side also reads well) and can record up to five fingers. In addition, in the case of Huawei we have other functions such as talk or shoot pictures. Of course, being in the back had been grateful that had enabled double tap to unlock.
Thus, we have curved edges with a bezel that give a sense of continuity in the front and rear with the edges, and they do quite comfortable. Yes, but it is pleasant to the touch, with a non – slip finish and looks quite resistant alloy (and nothing dirty), the terminal is not light. Nor can we say that it is excessively heavy, but keeping an eye only comparative we showed before is not the lightest.
Display: The FullHD is more than enough, but we forget the brightness
As mentioned, this is the big brother of the first Nova and in this case mounted an IPS panel of 5.5 inches with a resolution FullHD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels), having a density of about 401 pixels per inch. A resolution is consolidating as an average in the market and that in practice it is more than enough.
As for the brightness, we have the figure of 450 nits according to the manufacturer, but does not specify if this is the value of maximum brightness what we can say is that you are missing some nits if we are in broad daylight. In addition, they have work to do is in the automatic adjustment of the same, because nothing works well having a reaction time rather late as we move from one to another dark or vice versa, or simply by closing lit environment the app camera ( a few seconds it stays on minimum brightness, sometimes insufficient).
On the other hand, few drawbacks in terms of contrast, sensitivity to touch, or vivid colors. Here we said that there are options to at least try to adjust the temperature to suit the user with two pre-configured settings (one cooler and a warmer), while from the factory is quite neutral and away from cold panels (at least by default) as the Meizu M3 Note.
The loss due brightness viewing angle is soon to appear to tilt the screen, but do not exceed usual and not bother the planes in which we usually see the terminal (either on the table or hold). In this case, we also have an IPS panel, which tend not to sin saturation as if we see more times in the AMOLED and here we have nocomplaint, being balanced.
Thus, in general the experience is not bad but is penalized by the dullness that we mentioned, and the malfunction of the automatic adjustment. In its favor is the way “Protection of view,” which can make the shortcut to the curtain , and that filters blue light and do not usually find frequently in other Android handsets. It also has LED notifications, which can be disabled if desired.
Performance and software: The average dress term EMUI pass the exam
The Nova did not come to be among the Honor and the top end, riding a Snapdragon 625 processor and 3GB of RAM. As we said this is common in both terminals, so this a priori is not a distinguishing feature among the younger brother and older. In both cases Android also is under the layer of customization EMUI which specifically discuss a little later.
The experience with it is good, without experiencing lags notable incidents or stoppages or hinders the experience and only some occasional sudden closures (especially with Spotify). Apps or functions such as multitasking or unlocking are performed with acceptable fluency (for retailers: the release itself is very fast and “no click” awakening the start screen or not). The camera from the unlock screen takes a little longer to boot; here it’s some room for improvement (since they usually resort to this when we urgently start).
We tested a game in the demo for first impressions, and now we have to try some more (Asphalt 8, Real Racing, Dragon Matrix, Spiderman Ultimate Power), and in any case we could play without problems in load or execution. All we can point out here (which is not related to performance, but with the design) is that we usually cover the speaker with your hand, perhaps to be a relatively thin edge.

The Huawei tap the software
Historically, coat manufacturer has been quite heavy and aggressive in design and additions with respect to what Android offers per. In the latest versions design has adapted more to trends and have lowered in extras, but still find a very personal source software, for better and for worse.
This is a layer “to MIUI” or “to iOS”, i.e. without my drawer. As they are installed, apps pages are occupying the desktop and can organize them at will. As for those that are factory installed, we do not find too much (and arranged in a folder), but should have a look if not interest us (as they consume from the zero point, such as Facebook or Booking).
The curtain of notifications is also quite different, both in a first swipe down shows only notifications both system and apps, and we have to make a second swipe to the left to the usual quick controls (airplane mode, Bluetooth, etc. .). These, in fact, quite simple and no drop – down menus in the case of selecting networks or Bluetooth devices.
There are added features and interesting as the control and management of apps in terms of networks and energy (this last talk more specifically speaking of autonomy). It also offers a similar Control Center in iOS locked with quick access to recorder, camera and other display and controls for media playback menu.
Perhaps short stay ** Customization ** these basics, especially for those users who do not like the layout of apps without drawer. However, one of the factory apps (which cannot uninstall, by the way) is the topic, which lets you choose from a fairly wide selection (many free).
One of the aspects that time robbed the presentation of new devices Nova was the camera, giving importance especially to the front or rather his faced to get the best snapshot for social sharing functions. If it is a distinguishing feature and the Nova Plus we have a rear 12 – megapixel camera with OIS and dual flash and a front 8MP.
Here we find that the improved strength and its time is the camera app. Positives: It is a very, very complete app , with real manual controls that allow you to independently adjust exposure, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, focus and light source, and with specific functions for night shooting, silk effect on the water and even to photograph food. Negatives: with so many elements is difficult to have a clear provision and to understand, and in fact in this case is sometimes quite confusing.
That said, we go with the outcome of the lenses. Overall, we have an acceptable result for the hardware that mounts and focused on social networking and other use, with good light and when it is more scarce and even in backlit situations, but here you have to play with the focus especially if we are recording video. You are missing something saturation, taking some snapshots with something dull colors, and loss of detail appears fairly soon, which when this lack of vibrancy in the colors adds gives a somewhat mediocre pictures.
Indoor loss of detail is more pronounced, and this lack of saturation or vividness. It is especially noticeable in macros, which will require more light to get some more sharpness. And where the camera suffers most is when the sunlight is already scarce (late evening), tending to underexpose a lot in auto shooting (and invading the result noise).
As mentioned, the manual setting is very complete and also have it for video. In addition to improving sometimes automatic, especially in night scenes, it allows us to play with the shutter speed to achieve certain effects, although here Huawei has different preset modes in a prepared initially for certain items, such as stelae or supernoche mode.
In practice, however, we have a very different use them, the case in most of the cases of slower shot result. In fact, the supernoche so often overexpose if we leave it on automatic and it is difficult to obtain here the silk effect or the light trails, forcing to go testing between one way and another, still quite cumbersome.
Leaving this side, with the front camera have acceptable results in most cases in the case of a lens and smaller sensor. The main drawbacks: the shot is usually very slow (counts down three seconds) and we have no flash, although the option to shoot a quick autofocus with the fingerprint sensor and the rear camera.
Battery: When the available space is used well
The Huawei Nova Plus surpasses that kind of barrier of 3,000 milliamps / hour with a battery of 3,340 mAh. In its favor in terms of hardware is the fact of having a FullHD screen, less demanding than the QHD, and as a software layer notify us by default and continuously from the apps that are passed consumption (at their discretion).
This makes it more likely to get a day even on days of intense activity (photography, games, data connection, etc.). On a day with moderate activity than usual, it is that we end the day with a 30% battery, so this is one of the strengths of the terminal. Consumption management is customizable and can move apps to the “white list”, i.e. that we are not notify overconsumption and, above all, do not we close it by passing the background.
Here we also have USB Type-C and fast charge; although in practice it is not the fastest in this. The approximate average time of full charge from scratch is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, far more than others such as ZTE Axon 7 (although the battery it is somewhat lower) or OnePlus 3. However, as what we light up pretty quickly and a moment load (half an hour) can save us the situation for a few hours.
In addition, you can also enable a way that will suggest minimum consumption automatically when we have low battery. One way that leaves our terminal with the most basic uses and the minimum brightness and no color. Only for those situations where we have to survive on a minimum percentage of battery.
Sound: The allies did not give that extra
Not as much as in the case of autofotos, but this considerable emphasis was also made to present the terminal and talk about the association with Harman / Kardon sound. The speaker is placed at the bottom on the left side (if we the terminal from the rear), having two grids which retain the symmetry in the design also at this edge.
The audio quality is good, considering that rarely will have our hand, blocking the sound. The peak volume in our tests has remained at 116 decibels, although these levels of quality loss is charged, the maximum volume of higher quality at 90-100 dBs.
This combined with the size, fit and quality of the screen, make it a good candidate for multimedia use, except for the detail that we mentioned before that sometimes we covered the speaker to grab “to the gamer ” (i.e. with both hands and horizontal). Despite this, the experience in sound is satisfactory, whether they opted for the output from the speaker and headphones.
